Dr Kumalo’s passion for medicine began at a young age. Raised in the Eastern Cape, where trauma-related injuries were prevalent, he initially aspired to specialize in trauma surgery to help address the urgent medical needs in underserved communities. However, during high school, he also developed a keen interest in engineering—drawn to its problem-solving nature and the hands-on technical skills involved. Ultimately, he pursued medicine, where he found surgery to be the perfect blend of both worlds: a field requiring meticulous technical ability, precision, and the ability to make an immediate impact on patients’ lives.
He completed his MBChB at Walter Sisulu University in 2007, followed by his internship at the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex and community service at East London Hospital Complex. His early career saw him gaining significant experience as a Medical Officer at East London Hospital Complex and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, before embarking on his specialist surgical training.
Dr Kumalo trained as a Surgical Registrar at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, earning his Fellowship of the College of Surgeons (FCS SA) in 2020 and his Master of Medicine (MMed) in General Surgery from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2021. He further sub-specialised in Gastrointestinal and HPB Surgery, completing a prestigious GIT Fellowship at Wits, rotating through key gastrointestinal surgical units at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, and Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. He obtained his Certificate in Gastroenterology (SA) in 2024, solidifying his expertise in the highly specialised field of HPB surgery.
Dr Kumalo’s passion for HPB surgery stems from the precision and delicacy required in managing complex liver, pancreas, and biliary conditions. He thrives in the intricacy of these procedures, appreciating the engineering-like approach needed to handle the delicate tissues and structures involved. His expertise includes minimally invasive liver and pancreatic surgery, laparoscopic procedures, and advanced gastrointestinal interventions.
Alongside his private practice, Dr Kumalo remains dedicated to academic surgery and public healthcare. He continues to serve as a sessional consultant at Pholosong Hospital, contributing to the training of junior doctors. His commitment to mentorship and knowledge-sharing reflects his deep belief in giving back to the medical community and shaping the next generation of surgeons.
Beyond his professional life, Dr Kumalo is a family man, and a proud father. He enjoys spending time outdoors, traveling, and engaging in fitness activities such as gym and sports.
